We're going to have a minor league update later on tonight, but we thought we'd cover the latest news around the Yankees from this weekend. We're also planning on having a review of the systems top prospects as we're close to finishing the opening month of the season.

-          In Scranton, Casey Fossum was signed to start on Saturday. The 31 year old former first round pick formerly of the Red Sox system pitched into the 4th inning before having to leave the game due to pitch count concerns. He recently was DFA'd from the Mets and signed a minor league deal with the Yankees quickly there after. As Chad Jennings reports, he'll likely have the most value as a lefty long reliever although he could still make the occasional start. You can find more here.

-          Some notes on other names not quite ready to make it into full game action: Chris Garcia, Jairo Heredia and Brett Smith are all pitching in extended spring training games. No time table has been set for their return. You can find the full report here.

-          After Anthony Claggett was called up to fill in for the injured Damaso Marte in New York, George Kontos got the call from Trenton to fill in at Scranton.  It's unclear whose spot in the rotation he'll fill but its certain he'll be a starter.  Kontos was 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA with 24 K and 9 BB in 20 and 1/3 innings.

-          In Trenton, Alan Horne made his first start since last year and predictably struggled. He went 3 and 2/3 giving up 6 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 5. Mike Ashmore speculates Jason Stephens may be recalled from Scranton to take the place of George Kontos.

-          Dave Robertson has been on the Yankees since April 16th. Mark Melancon has been on the team since the 25th. They both have pitched just 3.1 innings each so far. That's unacceptable to have Robertson in the bullpen and have him only work 3.1 innings over 16 days. Girardi showed some real adaptability with the bullpen in 2008 but there is a lack of it this year. You would think with Bruney and Marte on the DL, Veras looking completely lost and Edwar his usual enigmatic self, Melancon and Robertson should see a lot more innings.
