I saw Charleston was shut out and then went to check out the box score and noticed that they were not just shut out, they couldn't manage a hit or a walk for the game. Two pitchers were used an error was made, and a batter was hit by West Virginia, but that was all that kept it from being a perfect game.
For Tampa, 2005 4th round draft pick Lance Pendleton pitched a gem. He pitched 7 shutout innings, allowing just five hits, one walk, and striking out 4. He's 25 and in Tampa, so he's not much of a prospect at this point, but he has pitched well this season with an ERA of 2.58 to match an equally superb FIP of 2.55.
The top of the AAA lineup had a great day. Kevin Russo was 3 for 4 with three doubles and a HBP. Ramiro Pena was 2 for 3 with two doubles. Austin Jackson was 2 for 5 with 1 double and no strikeouts.
Zach Kroenke got the spot start for Scranton and pitched 4 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4. While his ERA is a sparkling .96, his FIP stands at a still solid, but less impressive 3.68. All three of the Yankees farmhands taken in the rule 5 draft and then returned to the Yankees have had their best seasons to date. The Yanks must be glad to have them back.
