Scranton comes back in the 9th against Buffalo, winning 5-4
  • Dan McCutchen got the start, and was very effective.  In 6 innings of 1-run ball, McCutchen gave up 6 hits and just 1 walk, while striking out 5.
  • Kei Igawa was mediocre in relief, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in 3 innings of work.  Still the same old Kei Igawa.  I wonder if the Yankees are thinking of trying him as a reliever.
  • Jason Lane was 2 for 4 with his 14th homer of the season.
  • Juan Miranda was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk.
  • Eric Duncan was 3 for 4, raising his average to .243.
  • JD Closser and Greg Porter were each 1 for 4.  Closser had a 3-run homer in the 9th inning to tie the game.
Trenton tops Portland, 6-1
  • Eric Hacker continued his dominant pitching, giving up 1 run on 6 hits in 7 innings of work.  He has a 1.85 ERA in Trenton, and has given up more than 1 earned run only once in his 7 starts at the AA level.
  • Ramiro Pena was 2 for 5.
  • Austin Jackson was 1 for 5 with his 8th homer of the season, and struck out twice.
  • Chris Malec was 1 for 2 with 2 walks.
  • Edwar Gonzalez, PJ Pilittere and Jose Tabata were each 1 for 4.  Gonzalez doubled.
  • Carlos Mendoza was 2 for 4 with a double.
  • Reegie Corona was 2 for 3 with his 2nd home run of the season.
Tampa falls to Palm Beach, 4-3
  • Michael Dunn had another mediocre outing, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings of work, and striking out 5.
  • Eduardo Nunez was 1 for 4 with a stolen base.
  • Seth Cooper was 1 for 2 with 2 walks.
  • Jose Gil was 4 for 4 with a double.
  • Kevin Smith and Seth Fortenberry were each 1 for 3.  Fortenberry walked and was also caught stealing.
Charleston defeats Savannah, 5-3
  • Jairo Heredia was the starter, and the 18 year-old was dominant.   In 7 innings of work, Heredia, braces and all, allowed an unearned run on 2 hits and 2 walks, with 6 strikeouts.  He also kept the ball on the ground, with 11 groundouts against 4 flyouts.  This lowered his ERA to 2.96 on the season, and helped him bounce back nicely from 2 poor starts in his previous 2 turns.
  • Craig Heyer struck out 1 in a perfect inning of relief.
  • Abe Almonte was 1 for 4 with a double.
  • Justin Snyder and Jesus Montero were also 1 for 4.  Snyder k'd 3 times.
  • Austin Romine was 2 for 4 with a double and his second career home run.
  • Brandon Laird was 1 for 3 with his 8th homer and a walk.
  • Austin Krum was also 1 for 3.
  • Carmen Angelini was 0 for 4 with his 26th error of the season (cue the Angelini trolls).
  • For those concerned about Angelini's defense, check out Savannah's teenage catching prospect, Francisco Pena.  Tonight he has 2 passed balls to give him a whopping 21 for the season.  Compared to Pena, I would say Montero and Romine are doing more than all right at this stage.
Staten Island over Aberdeen, 5-3 (completion of a suspended game)
  • Brandon Braboy was the starter, and only lasted 1/3 of an inning (presumably due to the rain).  He gave up a run on 3 hits.
  • Drew Shetrone struck out 3 in 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief.
  • Pat Venditte got his 3rd save, striking out 1 and working around a walk.
  • Walter Ibarra was 2 for 5 with a home run.
  • Ryan Adams was 2 for 5 with a double.
  • Mike Lyon was 1 for 3 with a wlak.
  • Jack Rye was 1 for 4.
  • Jahidiel Santamaria was 1 for 3 with a walk.
  • Melky Mesa was 2 for 4 with his 2nd jack of the season.
Staten Island blanks Aberdeen, 3-0 (7 innings)
  •  David Phelps got the start, and dominated.  In 6 shutout innings, the Notre Dame product gave up just 3 hits and a walk, and struck out 6.
  • Josue Selenes struck out 1 and walked 1 in a perfect 9th.
  • Braedyn Pruitt was 1 for 3 with a double.
  • Chris Baisley was 1 for 3.
  • Taylor Grote was 0 for 2 with a walk and 2 strikeouts.  Sadly, the guy who is probably the best position prospect on the team (with the possible exception of David Adams) is hitting .182.  Man this is a weak team.
  • Erik Lovett was 1 for 4.
  • Jahidiel Santamaria was 1 for 1 after pinch-running for Lovett.
GCL Yanks fall to the Braves, 10-3
  • Dellin Betances, still rehabbing, pitched poorly.  In 2 1/3 innings, Betances gave up 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits (but thankfully, no walks), and struck out 2.  He looks like he has a little while to go before he gets back to his effectively wild self.
  • Ryan Pope was also pounded in rehab, giving up 5 runs on 5 hits and a walk in 4 innings.
  • Jose Pirela was 0 for 5.
  • Chris Smith was 0 for 4 to lower his average to .167.  It's not so easy to hit .700 anymore, isn't it?
  • Mike Jones was 0 for 3.
  • Tom Bainridge was 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 strikeouts.
  • Jimmy Paredes was 2 for 4 with a triple to raise his average to .292.  He also made his 5th fielding error of the season.
  • Chase Weems was 0 for 3 with a walk.
Brett Gardner was throwin into the fire in his major league debut tonight, leading off and starting in left field.  He held his own, going 0 for 3 with a stolen base, and worked the pitcher to full counts in his first two at bats.
