Scranton falls to Columbus, 5-1
  • Dan McCutchen was the starter, and was decent.  He gave up 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and 3 walks, with 4 strikeouts.
  • McCutchen was opposed by our old friend Tyler Clippard, who allowed a run on 4 hits and 5 walks in 4 innings of work, with 2 strikeouts.  T-Clip has a 3.69 ERA on the season, and could end up in the Nat's rotation eventually.
  • Brett Gardner was 1 for 4 with a walk and his 30th stolen base.
  • Cody Ransom was 2 for 3 with 2 walks.
  • Matt Carson was 3 for 4, coming just a home run short of the cycle.
Trenton blanks Erie, 7-0
  •  Eric Hacker got the start and was (as Ashish would say) ballin'.  In 6 2/3 scoreless innings, the righty gave up 4 hits and 2 walks, and struck out 5.  He lowered his ERA to 1.97 with this outing.
  • Anthony Claggett struck out 1 in a perfect 9th inning.
  • Ramiro Pena was 1 for 4.
  • Colin Curtis was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and a walk.
  • Austin Jackson was 0 for 4.
  • PJ Pilittere was 1 for 5.
  • Cody Ehlers was 1 for 3 with a double.
  • Jose Tabata was 3 for 4 with a double, raising his average to .236.
  • Reegie Corona was 2 for 3 with a double.
Tampa's game was postponed, presumably due to rain. Charleston falls to Columbus, 6-1
  • Jairo Heredia got the start, and was not at his best.  In 5 1/3 innings, the 18 year-old gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 7.  His ERA on the season is 3.40.
  • Jonathan Ortiz struck out the side in a perfect 9th.
  • Abe Almonte and Justin Snyder were both 0 for 4.
  • Brad Suttle was 1 for 4 with his 5th home run.
  • Jesus Montero and Austin Romine were both 0 for 3.  Montero walked.

Staten Island edged out by Aberdeen, 7-6
  • David Phelps got the start, and was mediocre.  In 3 innings, he gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits and 1 walk, with 2 strikeouts.
  • Drew Shetrone struck out 5 in 3 innings of 1-hit, 1-run relief.
  • Jason Kiley allowed just 1 hit in 2 shutout innings.
  •  Raymond Kruml was 2 for 5 with a double.
  • Chris Baisley was 2 for 5.
  • Taylor Grote was 1 for 4 with a walk.
  • Erik Lovett and Melky Mesa were each 2 for 4 with a double.

GCL Yanks defeated the Phillies, 4-2
  • Ryan Pope, rehabbing, got the start, giving up 2 hits in 3 shutout innings, and striking out 3.
  • Manuel Banuelos was great in his 2nd outing, allowing just 1 hit in 3 scoreless innings, and striking out 3.  As I mentioned before, he is definitely a prospect to keep an eye on, especially since he is the youngest player on the team.
  • Manny Barreda made his season debut, allowing a run on 3 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings.  He will probably end up in Staten Island.
  • Jose Pirela was 2 for 4 with a stolen base.
  • Tom Bainridge was 2 for 4 with a double.
  • Chad Gross and Jimmy Paredes were both 1 for 4.
  • Chris Smith, DH'ing, was 1 for 3 with a double, his first minor league hit.
  • Corban Joseph was 1 for 4 with a double.
In other news, 9th-round draft pick Mikey O'Brien, a hard-throwing high school pitcher from Virginia, was signed today.  He turned down a scholarship from Winthrop University to sign with the Yankees, and might receive and overslot bonus.  I'm very intrigued by O'Brien, who despite his small stature can hit the mid 90's with his fastball.  He should be another young power arm to watch when he starts in the GCL.
