17 year-old Kelvin DeLeon, signed as a free agent in July 2007 for over 1 million dollars, made his debut for the DSL Yankees2 (the stronger of the 2 Yankee teams in the Dominican Summer League) tonight. He went 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 stolen bases, while playing rightfield and hitting cleanup. It's hard to gauge the level of the DSL competition, but I will definitely be following him. He is supposed to be an exciting young power hitter, and if his 2 steals tonight are any indication, he has some good speed as well. Some other DSL players of note worth following (though it's so difficult to predict, because they are so young) are 17 year-old 1st baseman Raymond Nunez (signed for a six figure bonus after the July 2 signing period), who supposedly has great power potential, outfielder Henry Pena (also 17), and outfielder Eduardo Sosa (also 17). Pena and Sosa were July 2 signees like DeLeon, and they also received 6-figure bonuses.  I was hoping to see DeLeon come stateside this summer to the GCL, but maybe they don't think he is ready.
