After two emails and a post from Peter Abraham, I guess the demand is out there for me to shed some light on this subject. The Red Sox are doing their annual "bring the top prospects to Boston to work out, meet the manager, attend a couple of show-seminars, and show off to the media" thing right about now. Both emails and Abraham ask: Why don't the Yankees do the same thing? Well, the truth is that they do. The entire national Red Sox organization is centered around Boston. That is the logical place for Sox prospects to do their winter work outs. The Yankees, on the other hand, are centered around their complex in Tampa. Yankee prospects have year-round facilities and coaching staffs available to them. For example, it has been widely reported by Phil Hughes is down there getting into shape early. He's not alone. The Yankees do their how-to-not-sound-dumb-with-the-media thing too, and I'm sure they give them a motivational speech every once in awhile. They just do it away from the bright lights, where real gains can be made. The Yankees, between the D.R. and Tampa, provide their prospects top-notch coaching, and infrastructure.
