A mixed bag for the Yankees today. Scranton gets blown out by Charlotte, 10 to 2.
  • Jeff Marquez got the start, giving up runs in 5 1/3 innings. He was actually pitching a strong game through 3, but allowed a 3-run home run in the 4th inning. He struck out 6 and walked 2, with a 2:1 GO/AO ratio. Overall, I actually think that this game was a positive for Marquez, who has been struggling to begin the season. The home run came at a bad time, but he was pitching well.
  • Chris Britton put his finger in the dam, pitching an inning and a third without allowing a run. He struck out 2 and walked 1.
  • Scott Strickland let the water flow, allowing 5 runs in an inning and a 1/3. His roster spot can't be very secure with Daniel McCutchen pitching well in Trenton and Dan Giese temporarily holding down a rotation spot. Once McCutchen hits the magic 40 innings look for the dominoes to start to fall.
  • Brett Gardner was the only prospect to have a good day. He went 2 for 4.
  • Juan Miranda and Jason Lane each had one hit.
  • Bam Bam was 0 for 3 with a walk. Little Duncan did not play.
Trenton beats New Britain, 7 to 4.
  • Jason Jones was hit usual hittable self, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 4. Despite a hot start, he's probably stuck in Double-A hell for the entire season.
  • Steve Jackson, who still exists, allowed a run in 2 innings.
  • Eric Wordekemper, pitching on his second consecutive day, got the save with a perfect inning.
  • Jose Tabata and Colin Curtis both had 2 hits. Tabata was also hit by a pitch.
  • Austin Jackson was 1 for 4 with a double and a walk.
  • Cody Ehlers, all of the sudden very hot, was 3 for 5 with a double.
  • Reegie Corona, back to batting 9th, was 1 for 3 with a double.
Tampa beats Dunedin, 7 to 1.
  • Alfredo Aceves, a Yankee signing out of the Mexican league this year, allowed a run in 5 innings. He struck out 4 and walked 1. If he ever makes the majors, he'll have some great endorsement opportunities.
  • J.B. Cox pitched a scoreless inning with 1 strikeout.
  • Mitch Hilligoss went 3 for 5.
  • Eduardo Nunez was 0 for 5.
  • Damon Sublett was 1 for 3 with 2 walks.
Charleston suffered just their 2nd loss of the season, falling to Savannah 6 to 4.
  • Adam O can be blamed, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) in just over 4 innings. He struck out 2 and walked 3. Adam O has a big arm, but he's shown terrible control both in Charleston and in Staten Island last year. The Yankees need to move him to the bullpen.
  • Old friend Jesse Hoover pitched a scoreless inning, walking 2 and striking out 1.
  • Abraham Almonte, Austin Krum, Jesus Montero, and Justin Snyder all went 2 for 5. Krum hit a double. Snyder's .400/.400/.500 line for the game actually lowers all three rate stats on the season for him.
  • Austine Romine, acting as the team's DH, did not get a chance to join the 2 for 5 party. He was 2 for 4.,
  • Brandon Laird was 1 for 4 with a double.
  • Carmen Angelini was 0 for 4.
You know, we all forgot about Austin Krum. He was given above-slot money and was considered a sleeper prospect coming out of the draft. He's now batting .333/.400/.500 on the season. Krum gets lost on that insane Charleston team, but he's much better than the Seth Fortenberry types that we've seen down there in years past.
