Baseball Prospectus is offering a free preview of their content until July 15, and I advise everybody to check it out, they have some pretty neat stuff. While I was browsing, I stumbled upon their
PECOTA cards, which have projections and list most comparable players for a plethora of major and minor leaguers. I decided to look up some Yankee prospects and young major leaguers to see what they BP has to say. Here are the results of my search (based on stats from 2006 and before, so no Joba or Kennedy):
Robinson Canó: The good: Carlos Baerga #1 before he dropped off he a very good player, Rod Carew #2, George Brett #7, Garrett Anderson #10. The bad: Ken Boswell #3, Andy Carey #19
Melky Cabrera: The good: Carlos Beltran #2, Robbie Alomar #3, Pete Rose #5. The bad: Rick Manning #1, Alfreo Griffin #6, Dion James #7.
Kei Igawa (based on Japan League statistics): The good: Denny Neagle #2, Chris Capuano #3, Steve Carlton #10. The bad: Alex Kellner #6.
Phil Hughes: The good: Jake Peavy #2, Brad Penny #3, Bert Blyleven #10. The bad: Bobby Bradley #1, Edwin Jackson #4, Yusmeiro Petit #7.
Tyler Clippard: The good: John Patterson #2, Ralph Terry #5. The bad: Brandon Knight #3, Angel Guzman #7, John Stephens #9.
Eric Duncan: The good: Joey Votto #6, Brad Hawpe #8. The bad: Richard Brown #1, Travis Ishikawa #2, Jon Tucker #4, Dernell Stenson #5 (you get the idea, not pretty).
José Tabata: The good: Jose Reyes #4, Miguel Cabrera #9. The bad: Kimani Newton #1, Domingo Cuello #2, Robert Valido #5.
Dellin Betances: The good: Matt Cain #1, Francisco Liriano #2, Joel Zumaya #3, K-Rod #4. The bad: Travis Blackley #5, Yusmeiro Petit #6, Jerome Williams #7.
It is interesting to see some of the comparable players, although remember, the less a player has played (especially Betances, whose projections are based on his sick GCL numbers), the less likely the projections are to be (although we can still hope he'll be Cain, Liriano, Zumaya and Cain all rolled in to one). Thanks to BP for offering the free preview. It's a great site, and worth checking out.
