The Yankees defeated the University of South Florida in their first spring training game earlier today by the score of 11-4. For the most part, the Yankees did a solid job offensively as they garnered 8 walks, 14 hits, and 0 Ks. On the flip side, pitchwise, the Yankees were cruising along in the game until they hit the speed bump named Kei Igawa. Before the eventful 6th inning, the Big Three (Joba, Ian, and Phil) cruised along pitching 5 innings of 1 hit ball while pumping up 5 Ks in the process. Then the Igawa show rolled in: he walked two straight, hit a batter, and then gave up a Grand Slam to pinch hitter Eric Baumann. He ended the inning with 2 Ks, but giving up 4 earned runs to any college team is inexusable, even if it is a spring training game. The window of opportunity for Igawa is closing fast, and with more showings like this, he certainly won't make the club out of spring training, let alone be trusted to hold onto a SWB Yankee starting job.
And now for our Yankee prospects:
Hitting:
Justin Christian: 0-2
Alberto Gonzalez: 1-3
Colin Curtis: 1-3, 2B
Austin Romine: 0-0, BB (caught Igawa-Wright)
Juan Miranda: 0-1, BB
Austin Jackson: 0-1, BB
Pitching:
Jeff Marquez: 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 Hits, 0 BB
Alan Horne: 1 IP, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 Hits, 0 BB
Chase Wright: 1 IP, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 Hits, 0 BB
Tomorrow, the Yankees will be playing against the Phillies at Clearwater. The game will start at 1:15 and should be an excellent game.
On that note, have a great weekend everybody!
