The Yankees released several prospects, including
R.J. Swindle, this week. Why they did, I can only wonder. Swindle couldn't have been better (0.61 ERA in 44 innings with 46 strikeouts and jsut 5 walks) in 2006. Maybe he showed up in camp out of shape or something. I was looking forward to seeing his 55 mph curveball in Trenton late in this season. (Hat tip to Mike from
RAB for the link to the
BA transaction page).
The Yankees released 2003 and 2004 busts
Estee Harris and
Jon Poterson, proving yet again how much of an overrated risk
late-1st high school athletes are.
Steve White is on the disabled list, and
back in Trenton. It turns out that I was fairly wrong with my prediction of the new Trenton Roster. I have a hard time believing that the Yankees have soured on White so much that they bumped him instead of the younger Jackson, Clippard, or Ohlendorfs, but this could signify a move to the bullpen. Trenton has five other starters on their roster. I'm hoping that White is only on the Trenton roster for the time being because of roster overload in Columbus.
Dellin Betances and
Zach McAllister will spend some time in extended spring training until being moved to Charleston. Don't be worried, because this is pretty normal. Both are prized young arms, and the Yankees will want them to get more than a Staten Island or Gulf Coast League season in to those arms in their age 19 seasons. They'll be in Charleston long before the draft.
Mike of River Ave Blues
ranked his top-30 prospects in the Yankee organization. Most notably, he ranked
Tyler Clippard 12th. Look for a response to this ranking from my good friend later today.
